Battle of the Books

Grade Level: 4th & 5th

The purpose of the Battle of the Books is to encourage students to read a wide variety of age appropriate novels. Students read a predetermined selection of books and test their knowledge by competing with other schools in the county. Battle of the Books builds teamwork and a love of reading.

 

Beta Club

Grade Level: 5th

The National Beta Club recognizes high academic achievement and good character. Students are eligible to be a member of the Beta Club if they have maintained a B average for two school years and obtained a passing score on all areas of the EOG. The Beta Club builds leadership among students as it works with the community on a variety of service projects.

 

Civic Oration

Grade Level: 5th

Sponsored by the Modern Woodman of the World, Civic Oration aims to enhance students’ writing and public speaking abilities. Each year, students write speeches based on a predetermined topic, and then present these speeches to their classmates. The winners of the class competition go on to compete at the school level, with a chance to move on to the district competition.

Orchestra

Grade Level: 5th 

Orchestra meets twice per week for 45 minutes. Orchestra is open to anyone who wants to learn how to play a string instrument, but you must start in 5th or 6th grade. After that time, beginning classes are not offered. The longer you stick with it and the more you practice, the better player you will become. You will perform concerts and take field trips, and you can even earn scholarships for college.

 

Show Choir

Grade Level: 4th & 5th 

The purpose of show choir is to highlight the singing talent of students at LBES. Show choir meets after school, and performs during school concerts. During show choir, students work on building their individual style of singing as well as teamwork skills necessary for group performances.

 

Spelling Bee

Grade Level: 4th & 5th

The annual spelling bee allows students to build spelling and grammar skills. Students study a list of words to compete at the class level. Winners from the class competitions go on to  compete at the school level, with the school winner advancing to the district competition.
